4.2: Just like ‘Rear Window’

Lottie spends a terribly tedious three days on her bunk in the Potting Shed. It is awfully boring! Her foot throbs to start with but then eases into a dull ache.

On the second day, she borrows Alcock’s old army field-glasses and surveys the outside world through the windows of the Potting Shed hoping to spot some secret crimes taking place.

At first she watches Masongill and pTravis going off to coppice the nearby woods, inspect the state of flood level of the stream which seems to have brought down more stones from upstream (they say that each winter it floods more and more and gets closer to the Potting Shed) and hide in what they must think is their secret den (she hasn’t told them she knows what and where it is).

Then she swings the field-glasses up to a roof light and sees the Pod, hanging from a nearby tree, high over head.

Through the glasses she can even see the peas moving inside it when it swings around in the breeze.

It wasn’t here last summer!

It has moved much closer. Why?
