4.9: The Pod

As she climbs, Lottie thinks about everything she knows about the Pod. 

Although they talk of a ‘pod’ and ‘peas’, the Pod obviously isn’t a normal peapod. For one thing, it seems to be independent of any particular root stock. Indeed, it seems to live, a bit like mistletoe, in trees. But even more extraordinarily, it does not seem to stay put. And yet the idea of its limbless peas climbing to another tree carrying the Pod is clearly absurd. So it remains a mystery. 

Further, the Pod itself never speaks directly to anyone. ‘She’ communicates only through her peas. Of all the communities Lottie knows of - her own Potting Shed, the boozy Swan Hotel, the small creatures of the Think Tank in their strange little TARDIS - the Pod’s is the most strangely interconnected.
