16: A further clue in the chest
Alcock is confused both that Juggins-the-False is still camping nearby and that he has not yet spent the money that he went to such trouble to steal. (He must have waited until everyone else was asleep. Then he must have picked up the piggy bank. Then he must have walked away at some speed. The daring! The cunning! Or possibly, more slowly. The cunning! The daring!)
But then he notices another piece of paper, folded up and hidden below all the 5p pieces and sees what Juggins planned to use the money for but has not yet done so.
Juggins-the-False planned to buy a bomb! And, with a sudden flashback, as sometimes happens in films, he remembers another piece of paper they found at the ‘den’.
Juggins planned to buy a bomb and send it to the mole catcher in the town near the village that Masongill comes from: the village which is itself also called ‘Masongill’ and in which the Bad Thing happened. But perhaps, when it came actually to doing this, he had second thoughts. Perhaps that is why he is still camping out in his den as though stuck, both wanting and not wanting to carry out such a drastic act. But why would Juggins want to do this? Why does it matter to him?
If only Alcock could put these pieces of the puzzle together and work out what is going on!
