3.7: Crow
Now he knows that his dream-self has been tricked by Death, Froggie realises that it is only a matter of time before he is visited in the real wakened world. Every noise he hears startles him, even though he tries to persuade himself he is forewarned.
Today there was a tapping and, for once, peering through the window it was obvious what was causing it. Outside stood a huge crow. Normally, he would have had a grudging respect to this: ‘his sort of bird’. But today it seemed a harbinger. When before has such a large crow been seen round here?
That last dream has removed his temporary comfort and made even his limited domain of the snug saloon of the Swan Hotel uncanny again.
